This Mets Prospect threw a no-hitter, but no one talks about him. An Analysis of Joander Suarez, also a really cool adjustment he made. By Isaac Groffman Last year, after getting promoted to AA Binghamton Joander Suarez put up 13 strait hitless innings, including a 7 inning no-hitter in Hartford.  The 24 year is deep on the Mets Starter Pitching depth chart but, I believe he can make an impact in the MLB this year. Joander Suarez was promoted from A+ to AA late last August mostly due to Binghamton needing a starter.    But he also had made some adjustments that Mets brass must have noticed. Suarez does not have the pedigree of a Christian Scott or Brandon Sproat.   But his ability to make adjustments has caused him to gain momentum as he makes his way through the upper minors.    So let’s take a look at his pitch mix and adjustments he has made. Suarez's pitch arsenal consists a Fastball that averages 95.2 MPH, a Gyro Slider that he throws 31% of the time, an uppers 70's Curveb

This Mets Prospect May Have the Most Electric stuff in the Minors Leagues

An Analysis of Brandon Sproat The Mets selected Brandon Sproat for the 2nd time in two years in the 2nd round of the 2023 draft. The 23-year-old has gotten off to a roaring start in high Brooklyn, posting a 0.92 ERA in 19.2 innings. Let's look into what his future could look like. As a starter in his Junior year at Florida, Sproat posted a 4.66 ERA in 106.2 IP. His Fastball got hit hard at times and he has had issues repeating his release point, causing him to tip pitches and lose control. However, he did have some dominant performance in the CWS. Sproats Fastball touches 101 and at times has incredible run.  The pitch does not have superb rise at about 15 iVB but from his flat arm angle, it can play up in the zone.  The pitch has sat around 95-95 topping out at 98 early in the year at Brooklyn. Sproats main strikeout pitch in college, especially to lefties was his changeup. The pitch has a ton of drop and horizontal movement. But it has incredible horizontal movement and it sits i

An Overview of the AAA Syracuse Mets Bullpen

Who is performing well? Who isn't? Who can make an impact in the MLB? and Injury Updates Shintaro Fujinami 5.3 IP 15.88 ERA 3.34 WHIP 7 SO 13 BB Fuji has been...well terrible at AAA so far. He still can't find the zone, velo and K's are still there but 20.6 BB/9 will not cut it.. It is still a small sample. Check out my thread on him: https://twitter.com/isaacgroffman/status/1771732538442055865 Bryce Montes de Oca   60 Day IL BMdO missed the 2023 season due to his second Tommy John surgery. The flame-thrower has high-end stuff as many Mets fans know. But there is concern that his unorthodox mechanics are unsustainable. No longer on the 40-man, he is expected back in Mid-2024.   Yacksiel Ríos   12.2 IP 2.84 ERA 1.50 WHIP 15 K 8 BB 3 SV Ríos has mostly acted as the Mets AAA closer this year. The 30 year old MLB and WBC vet features a FB that touches 99, a Sweeper and high velo Change. If he can keep his walks down he could be an effective bullpen piece. Eric Orze   13.1 IP 4.

What to Expect From Christian Scott in the MLB

Image
Christian Scott is Getting Called up! Here are some thoughts on what to expect from him. Christian Scott is poised for a big debut, as he's getting called up to the major leagues. Here's what you can expect from this exciting pitching prospect.  I would not be surprised if Scott pitches out of the bullpen at some point this year.   That is how Stearns likes to ease top pitching prospects into the Majors.  He's had a strong season in Triple-A, posting a 3.20 ERA and showing great command on the mound.  The right-hander pounds the strike zone with confidence, especially when it comes to his fastball. While his fastball doesn't have the rise of some of the elite pitchers, he consistently locates it well up in the zone. With velocity reaching 98 mph and a low arm angle, the pitch has an impressive 32.1% whiff rate against it. Scott's main strikeout weapon this season has been his sweeper. Hitters have been chasing the pitch outside of the zone 61.9% of the time. Howeve

Is This The Mets Most Underrated Pitching Prospect? An Analysis of Tyler Stuart

Image
An Analysis of Tyler Stuart Tyler Stuart grabbed the attention of some prospect watchers last season after he finished with the lowest ERA in the minor leagues at 2.20.  However, there is more behind this shiny number  as  the peripheral numbers are not as  nice  for Stuart.  He racked up many of his good numbers while pitching for the Mets high-A affiliate in Brooklyn, a  stadium that is notoriously hard to hit in .  When he got called  up  to  double-A  his numbers regressed, posting a 3.60 ERA.  Despite his impressive  2023   Stuart's  future as a starter is far from certain  but  that does not mean he  can’t  be a valuable asset for the Mets.  The intrigue around Stuart starts with his height , standing  at 6- 9  Stuart is an imposing presence on the mound.  Naturally, he has elite extension  making  his fastball  which  sits around 92-96  look  even faster  the pitch  also features  above above-average  sink due to his low arm slot.  Recently  Stuart  seems to be throwing dist

Do the Mets really have the next Ohtani?

Image
A (pitching) analysis of Nolan McLean.  After the emergence of Shohei Ohtani, teams are eager to find the next two-way star. So when the Mets drafted Nolan McLean in the third round and allowed him to continue to hitting and pitching it was not a surprise. But can he really pitch and hit at the MLB level? I can only answer the pitching part of that question and the answer is yes. As @James_Schiano said on @MetsdUp McLean's slider is good enough to be an MLB reliever right now. It is special, with 3,200+ RPMS and speeds approaching 90 MPH it would be one of the best in the MLB. As a reliever McLean reminds me of Orion Kerkering, you might remember him as the young Phillies reliever who dominated the mets last year. His slider was thought to be one of the best the league had ever seen, and McLeans slider might be even better. Kerkering’s slider peaks at about 3,000 RPMS where as McLean regularly touches 3,200. The slider paired with his fastball that touches 98 would make him a letha

The Mets next high-rising pitching prospect - An analysis of Jonah Tong

*This article is an expanded version of a thread on Twitter/X follow me there - https://twitter.com/isaacgroffman* The Mets next high-rising pitching prospect. An analysis of Jonah Tong.   By Isaac Groffman With the latest crop of young Mets Pitching prospects climbing MLB prospect rankings, it's time to talk about the next class of Mets pitchers who will begin showing up on top prospect lists this summer. Leading this class is 20 year old Jonah Tong. The 7th-round draft pick out of Ontario has gotten off to a roaring start striking out 21 batters over 8 innings in his first two starts of 2024.   When watching Tong the first thing that stands out to me is his delivery. It is unique because he strides down the mound almost hiding the ball behind his back. Then he brings his arm way over the top (Video courtesy of Prospects Live on YouTube).   This over-the-top motion almost reminds me most of a much shorter Tyler Glasnow. Like Glasnow Tong also has a high spin fastball, thrown from
