What is the future of Tylor Megill?

Isaac Groffman

With new young pitchers coming up through the mets system, its easy to forget about Tylor Megill. However, I still think he could still be useful for the Mets in 2024. But it will have to be in a very different role.

Megill has certainly shown potential as a starter. We all remember his dominant 2022 opening day start in DC, where his fastball topped out at 99 and he had a nasty slider and changeup. But then injuries struck and he barely pitched in the second half of 2022.

As we had to sit through one mediocre start after another in the first half of 2023, we thought that we would never see the Megill from the first half of 2022 again. But in the second half of 2023things started to slowly change, it started with getting his velocity back.

His slider was getting more whiffs and of course he. developed his his "American spork". This all came together in his last start of the year, a masterful 7.1 inning 1 hitter with 7 K's.

After watching Megill's ups and downs these last 3 years, it has become clear to me what his future is: a reliever. It was common in Megill's 2023 starts for him to get through 3 or 4 innings only to fall apart in the 5th or 6th.

This for a reason, his best pitch has long been his fastball it is able to dominate for a few innings but batters can figure it our eventually the second time through the order, and Megill's secondary pitches have never been good enough to really keep batters guessing.

I believe that Megill would excel in a middle relief role. He could come in for 1 or 2 innings, dominate with his fastball and throw less secondary pitches. He would also be at less of an injury risk. There is no reason why we should give up on Tylor Megill. If the Mets and Jeremy Hefner find a way maximize his pitch arsenal as a reliever he could be an extremely valuable bullpen piece.
